Nomination Period

The nomination period begins January 1, 2021 and runs until 12 noon on Nomination Day: Monday, September 20, 2021.

Election Day

Election Day is Monday, October 18, 2021. 

Mackenzie County is divided into ten electoral areas called wards.  Each ward has a Councillor that has been elected by citizens within his/her ward boundaries.  Each Council member serves a four-year term.  The elected Council then elects a Reeve and Deputy Reeve from within, on an annual basis.

The candidate information guide contains information on pertinent legislation, elected official positions, candidate eligibility, nomination procedures, campaigning, and voting procedures.  This information is not a replacement for consulting the actual legislation or obtaining legal advice.  There may be severe penalties, including fines and disqualification from elected office, if you are found to be in breach of any provisions.

The Nomination Paper and Candidates Acceptance Form is valid if signed by at least five eligible voters.  It is recommended that candidates obtain more than the required number of signatures to avoid eligibility challenges.  A Supplementary Nominations & Contact Information Form has been included.  Candidates must also complete and file the Candidate Financial Information Form at the same time as their Nomination Paper.

Nomination Eligibility

Nomination Eligibility - You are eligible for nomination if you meet ALL of the following criteria:

  • you are eligible to vote in this election
  • you are a resident of Mackenzie County AND the Ward, for six consecutive months immediately preceding Nomination Day
  • you are not otherwise ineligible or disqualified
  • See Section 22 of the Local Authorities Election Act for Ineligibility of Candidates.

Voter Eligibility

Voter Eligibility - You are eligible to vote if you meet ALL of the following criteria:

  • you are 18 years of age or over
  • you are a Canadian citizen
  • you live in Alberta
  • you are a resident of Mackenzie County and the Ward on Election Day
  • you have acceptable voter identification
  • you have not voted in this election before
  • you sign a declaration that you meet these qualifications

Voter Identification Requirements

In order to vote, you must produce identification for inspection.  The identification must be one or more of the following as required by section 53 of the Local Authorities Election Act or local bylaw.

  • One piece of photo identification issued by a Canadian government which includes the elector's name and current address
  • Operator/Driver's License;Government Photo Identification Card (for non-driver's); or

One piece of identification authorized by the Chief Electoral Officer under the Election Act that establishes the elector's name and current address.  Click here for voter identification requirements for local elections.

Attestation of Identity and Ordinary Residence for Tenant Elector - this form may be used by renters to prove residency for the purposes of voting at the election.
