Fort Vermilion Airport (Wop May Memorial)
The Fort Vermilion (Wop May Memorial) Airport is a registered aerodrome serving general aviation users and is located just east of the Hamlet of Fort Vermilion in Mackenzie County, Alberta. The airport identifier code for Fort Vermilion Airport is CEZ4.

The airport has a single runway, Runway 08-26 that is 1,219.2m long and 30.5m wide (4,000ft x 100ft). Currently, the runway is categorized as a Code 3B and the Beech King Air 200 is considered the designated design aircraft.

The airport sees Cessna Caravan (C-208) and even Dash 8 traffic occasionally.

The La Crete (Jake Fehr Memorial) Airport is a registered aerodrome serving general aviation users and is located south-east of the Hamlet of La Crete, in Mackenzie County, Alberta. The airport identifier code for La Crete Airport is CFN5.

The airport has a single runway, Runway 07-25 that is 1,342m long and 30.5m wide (4,403ft x 100ft). Currently, the runway is categorized as a Code 3B and the King Air 200 is the designated design aircraft.

The official geodetic location of La Crete (Jake Fehr Memorial) Airport as indicated in the Canada Flight Supplement is latitude N 58° 10’ 38”, longitude W 116° 20’ 06”. The airport elevation is 319.43m (1,048ft) above sea level.

Ferry & Ice Bridge Status

The Tompkins Landing crossing on the Peace River provides an important seasonal connection between La Crete and communities west of the river along Highway 697. During the warmer months, vehicles cross the river using the La Crete Ferry, while in winter an ice bridge is constructed to maintain access. Road ConstructionMackenzie County oversees road construction projects, access development, and infrastructure improvements that support safe, efficient transportation for residents, businesses, and future growth across the region.Planning new road access, approaches, or construction adjacent to County infrastructure may require approval to ensure safety, compliance, and proper road system protection.Use the Road Construction and Access Request Form to apply for new approaches, road access modifications, or related construction activities within Mackenzie County road allowances.Access ConstructionAccesses to County roads must meet established safety guidelines. An Access Request Form must be submitted and approved before construction or alterations begin. Applications are accepted year-round, with an initial response provided within 30 days. Inspections may be delayed during frozen or snow-covered conditions.Road ConstructionProperty owners may apply to construct roads on municipal road allowances to access agricultural or other lands. Applications are accepted year-round and reviewed first-come, first-served, with an initial response within 30 days. Mackenzie County maintains an extensive network of municipal roads that connect communities, farms, and industries across the region. The Operations Department is responsible for maintaining County roads year-round, including grading, graveling, snow removal, drainage, signage, and other infrastructure that helps residents and businesses travel safely.Roads not maintained by the county include private roads in mobile home parks, private driveways, roads owned by the industry, and highways. Snowplowing and ice control focus first on air ambulance runways, arterial roads, and emergency facilities, followed by collector roads, hamlet streets, and school bus routes, then local roads and sidewalks.Rural residents may also request driveway snow removal by purchasing a Snowplow Flag and completing an annual application. The flag must be placed visibly at the end of the driveway and provides up to 15 minutes of plowing service when graders are operating in the area. Road Bans
Road bans are implemented to help reduce damage to County roads during spring breakup, when pavement and roadbeds become moisture-filled and more vulnerable to deterioration from heavy vehicle traffic.

If you plan to haul heavy loads during this period, a Road Protection Agreement must be signed in advance. Agreements are available through any Mackenzie County office.

Current Mackenzie County Road Ban:
80% year-round road ban on Heliport Road along TWP RD 110-4 from Highway 35 to RGE RD 19-0 (implemented February 2, 2022)

Hauling on County Roads
Commercial or industrial hauling on Mackenzie County roads requires a Road Use Agreement prior to hauling activities.

Policy PW010: Road Protection outlines the conditions under which agreements are required to help protect County infrastructure from excessive wear or damage.
