Mackenzie County is currently inviting applications for Casual Equipment Operators. The primary locations for these positions will be in Fort Vermilion and La Crete, however the individuals may be required to work in other areas of the municipality as per operational requirements. These are unionized positions and the hours of work are on an as needed basis.
Reporting to the Public Works Supervisor (Fort Vermilion & La Crete), the successful applicants will be responsible for:
- Operate heavy equipment (grader) in a safe and appropriate manner and maintain proper awareness of one’s surroundings while operating grader on public roadways.
- Maneuver equipment with attached blades in successive movements across work areas in order to move rocks, vegetation or topsoil and to spread and level terrain.
- Checks grader daily to maintain efficient and safe operational status: Greasing, oil changes, routine equipment maintenance, and grader blade changes.
- Operate equipment in a manner that will not result in undue or unnecessary equipment breakdown, is capable of scraping roads in an efficient manner, blading roads to proper crown, and efficiently filling in the rough sections of roads.
- Maintenance and repair of signs, culverts, etc.;
- Assisting with crack-filling; pavement patching;
- Some weekend or holiday work may be required (Saturday & Sunday);
- Other duties as required.
Requirements for these positions are:
- Valid class 5 drivers’ license; class 1 or 3 an asset;
- Two to three years’ related experience;
- Mechanical knowledge of heavy equipment;
- Knowledge of the Mackenzie County road network;
- Moderate physical strength and stamina;
- Knowledge of road maintenance;
- Adequate verbal and written communication skills;
- Evidence of successfully passing a police Criminal Record Check.
Wages: $33.47/hr. – $41.36/hr. As per the Collective Agreement, vacation pay will be calculated based on six percent (6%) of your earnings.

Mackenzie County is currently inviting applications for an Equipment Operator seasonal position. Generally, the term of this position is from July – October. The primary location for the position will be in La Crete, however the individual may be required to work in other areas of the municipality as per operational requirements. This is a seasonal unionized position with a 40 hour work week (8 hours per day) Monday to Friday.
Reporting to the Public Works Supervisor (South), the successful applicant will be responsible for:
- Manual labour (i.e. shoveling dirt);
- Maintenance and repair of signs, culverts, etc.;
- Responsible for safe loading and moving of equipment;
- The safe operation and minor maintenance of County equipment;
- Assisting with crack-filling, pavement patching, road construction;
- Some weekend or holiday work may be required; (Saturday and Sunday)
- Other duties as required.
Requirements for this position is:
- Valid Class 5 drivers’ license; Class 1 or 3 an asset;
- Two to three years’ experience operating equipment (i.e. loader, backhoe, tractor, skid steer);
- Moderate physical strength and stamina which includes heavy lifting, bending, twisting and squatting;
- Mechanical knowledge of equipment would be an asset;
- Knowledge of road maintenance;
- Adequate verbal and written communication skills;
- Evidence of successfully passing a police Criminal Record Check;
- Preference will be given to university/college students.
Wage range: $29.61/hour – $37.50/hour

Mackenzie County is currently inviting applications for an Administrative Assistant position. The primary location for this position will be in La Crete, however, the individual may be required to work in other areas of the municipality as per operational requirements. This is a full-time unionized position with a 40 hour work week (8 hours per day) Monday to Friday.
Reporting to the Director of Planning & Development, the successful applicant will be responsible for:
- Providing administrative support to the Planning & Development Department (data entry, file creation, digital filing, etc.);
- Create designs and maps using computer programs such as Catalis;
- Assisting the front counter administrative assistant with their duties when required;
- Assisting public in completion of municipal related forms (road access, construction, dust control, utility connections & disconnections, etc.);
- Preparing meeting agenda packages and take meeting minutes;
- Communicating with the public in a professional manner;
- Other duties as required.
Requirements for this position are:
- Completion of Grade 12 Diploma, post-secondary is considered an asset;
- Two (2) years of experience in an administrative position;
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint);
- Attention to detail, accuracy and professionalism;
- Ability to effectively communicate both orally & in writing with the public and with municipal, provincial and federal agencies;
- Ability to work with minimal supervision and in a team environment;
- Must be a self-starter and motivated to complete projects and tasks with minimal supervision;
- Excellent organizational skills;
- General knowledge of the County would be an asset.

Salary Range: $50,086 – $66,477 per annum. Mackenzie County offers a Comprehensive Benefit Package.

Mackenzie County is currently inviting applications for a Weed Inspector position. The term of this position will be from August – October. The primary location for this position will be in Fort Vermilion, however, the individual may be required to work in other areas of the municipality as per operational requirements. This is a seasonal unionized position with a 40 hour work week (8 hours per day) Monday to Friday.
Reporting to the Agricultural Fieldman, the successful applicant will be responsible for:
- Inspecting and enforcing weed control within the County;
- Investigating weed and pest complaints;
- Assisting the Agricultural staff with agricultural related duties, which can include crop pest and disease inspections, beaver control and beaver dam removal, road side grass seeding, and delivery of the rental pump and pipe;
- Assist with the Shelterbelt Tree Program;
- Other duties as required.
Requirements for this position is:
- Completion of Grade 12 Diploma;
- Agricultural education and/or background is an asset;
- Knowledge of weed identification is essential;
- Valid Industrial Pesticide Applicators Certificate is an asset;
- Familiarity with the Alberta Township Act (ATS) System & the ability to locate land parcels using legal land descriptions;
- Basic equipment operating skills (i.e. tractors, quads, picker truck, etc.);
- Good written and verbal communication skills;
- Computer knowledge is a requirement;
- Ability to work with minimal supervision;
