The Utilities Department oversees utilities throughout Mackenzie County including water treatment and distribution, the collection and treatment of sewage, storm drainage, and management of the County’s rural water points. Utilities personnel are also responsible for hydrant flushing, sewer flushing, account connections and disconnections, and meter installs and repairs.

The Utilities Department plans for growth by following water consumption and population trends to secure water supply and ensure the services are prepared for the growth. Under provincial regulations, the department is required to operate in accordance with the Alberta Environment Protection and Enhancement Act, Water Act, Potable Water Regulation, as well as Code of Practice for Wastewater Systems Using a Wastewater Lagoon. Additionally, the department must abide by federal regulations such as the Fisheries Act and Wastewater Effluent Regulations.

Payment Options

Entering into a pre-authorized payment agreement allows your payments to be automatically withdrawn from your bank account so you can avoid late-payment penalties. You can not use credit card for preauth payments. Information on how to sign up for preauth can be found here.

Payments can be made online through your bank. Please allow a minimum of 3 business days for your payment to be processed.

Please make cheques payable to Mackenzie County. Cheques may only be post-dated up to and including the due date. Payments can be made with a cheque in person at any County Office. An after-hours drop-box is also available at the Fort Vermilion and La Crete County Offices. For cheques deposited into a dropbox, a receipt will be mailed. Cheques sent by mail should be addressed to Mackenzie County, 4511-46 Avenue, Box 640, Fort Vermilion, AB, T0H 1N0.

Payments can be made with cash or debit card in-person at any County Office. Please do not send cash by mail or deposit cash into an after-hours drop-box.

Payments can be made by Visa or MasterCard over the phone by calling any County Office, in person at any County Office location, or through PaySimply.

PaySimply.ca is a payment method approved by the Canada Revenue Agency which allows you to make payments with a credit card. Note that a 2.5% convenience fee is charged per transaction. Please allow a minimum of 3 business days for your payment to be processed. PaySimply

Cancel Utilities

To cancel a utility service, you must complete the Utility Account Move Out form.

Water and Sewer Rates

Rates for water consumption are set out in Mackenzie County’s Fee Schedule Bylaw.

  • Water: $37.04 per month plus $3.43 per cubic meter of consumption
  • Sewer: $31.52 per month plus $0.73 per cubic meter of consumption

There are six rural water points with non-potable water located within Mackenzie County for residential use at no charge. Locations of the water points are as follows:
