Media Release – Agriculture Disaster Declared
News | July 24, 2025

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
In light of worsening drought conditions, persistent moisture shortages, and above average pest activity the Council of Mackenzie County has officially declared an agricultural disaster for the region. The decision was made after a special council meeting held on July 24, 2025.
The northern Alberta region has been grappling with extended dry weather patterns and insufficient rainfall for a number of years, and it has continued into the 2025 growing season. These conditions have led to drastically reduced hay harvests, deteriorating pasture conditions, and minimal annual crop yields. The livestock industry, in particular, is facing challenges due to dwindling feed resources as we approach the fall and winter months.
The declaration reflects the Council’s concerns about the sustainability of local agricultural businesses and the mental well-being of farmers. The lack of adequate feed for livestock, minimal rainfall leading to drought conditions and pests decimating crop and affecting yields further exacerbates these challenges, threatening the livelihoods of countless producers.
A municipal declaration of an agricultural disaster does not influence a provincial declaration or access funding supports. Municipal declarations bring awareness to an issue in a specific area of the province, but they do not trigger a provincial declaration or access to any funding to support the issue.
